EXCELLENT VIDEO INSTALLATIONS IN BANGKOK

The information below is copied from an e-mail I sent to someone:

Two video installation events were held in Bangkok and the videos shown are excellent. One video is HERO by Taweesak Srithongdee. It showed faces of many important people in the history and used some graphic techniques to play with these faces. The video lasts longer than an hour.

The other video is ANAT(T)A by Akritchalerm Kalayanamitr and Koichi Shimizu. Shimizu is a Japanese musician who has been working in Thailand for many years. Akritchalerm worked as a sound technician in some of Apichatpong’s films. ANAT(T)A consists of two components—the silent video and the sound. The silent video shows the views of many places in Bangkok with no story. The sound is made by some computer programs. The audience must create the soundtracks by themselves while watching the video. They can do it by pushing any of the buttons hung from the ceiling in the room. There are about 50 buttons in the room. Each button creates different sound. One button creates the sound of a barking dog. Another button creates the sound of a firecracker, etc. The computer programs mix the sound of all the pushed buttons. Thus, the soundtrack of this video changes every time you go to see it. Both the sound and the video are very inspiring. The film requires no story, because the audience can create the story by themselves inside their mind.

ANAT(T)A is my most favorite film of this year so far. I normally don’t make separate lists between films and video installations, because there are few video installations held in Bangkok each year, maybe not more than 20 events a year. So I tend to include video installions in my favorite film list.
